Packaged Facts survey data from 2019 show 82% of dog owners and 65% of cat owners took one or more pets to a veterinary clinic for any reason, not necessarily restricted to veterinary care in narrow medical terms. Among those who visited a vet, 76% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners did so for a routine/non-emergency check-up, and 17% of dog owners and 12% of cat owners did so for urgent/emergency care.

App- and cloud-based technologies are reconfiguring the veterinary business at the consumer and practitioner levels by connecting pet owners with veterinarians, affording easier management and sharing of pet health information, and offering substantial Internet-based opportunities to even the smallest veterinary operator. Capabilities and levels of sophistication vary, but all of the new platforms have in common smartphone apps designed to involve pet owners more deeply in the healthcare of their pets. Due in part to the recent launch of a brick-and-mortar component, Petco’s PetCoach online veterinary consultation platform has gotten most of the media attention of late, but a number of other companies are also making inroads.
