Dog Owners Represent a Key Market Segment

Between 2008 and 2018, the number of households with dogs grew by 18% and the dog population registered an increase of 14%. During the same period, the number of households owning cats or other types of non-canine and non-feline pets, as well as the number of pets in these categories, declined.

Boomers and Seniors Are Fast Becoming a Bulwark of the Pet Industry

A fundamental shift in the profile of pet owners has occurred as Americans in the 55-and-over age group have become much more likely than their predecessors to hang on to the companionship of pets as they age. Over the past decade the 55- to 74-year-old age group is the only age segment to have experienced an increase in the pet ownership rate.

Affluent Pet Owners Wield Outsize Purchasing Power

As American society has rapidly divided into haves and have-nots, the profile of pet owners has changed accordingly. Over the past 10 years the percent of pet owners with a household income of $100,000 or more has increased from 31% to 40%.
