The pet medications market operates across a spectrum of distribution channels. At one end is the veterinary channel, where pet owners obtain professional services and medical diagnoses and expect top-notch advice and guidance on product usage. At the other end of the spectrum is the online channel, which offers potentially lower prices and reams of information but little to no hands-on professional guidance.

This report examines the retail market for medications for dogs and cats, with a focus on products purchased directly by consumers. These include prescription, over-the-counter (also called OTC or retail products), and “ethical” products (nonprescription medications that are only distributed to veterinarians).

The primary focus of this report is on the core types of antiparasitics/parasiticides—heartworm prevention, flea/tick prevention, heartworm/flea combo products, and other dewormers (some of which also target other external parasites such as mosquitoes, flies, ear mites, lice, and sarcoptic mange, and/or other types of internal parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms), but it also covers market-shaping developments in areas including anxiety, pain management, cancer, cognitive dysfunction, and obesity/diabetes.

Animal health products for production animals and horses are excluded from this market analysis, as are nutritional supplements for companion animals and horses, which are covered in Packaged Facts’ April 2019 report Pet Supplements in the U.S., 7th Edition, and March 2017 report U.S. Equine Market, 3rd Edition.
