This report analyzes current and projects future retail sales and trends across the U.S. pet industry, factoring in the current and projected impact of the coronavirus pandemic across all areas of the market, based on the situation as of late March 2020 and the expected trajectory of the crisis. It examines collectively and separately four categories of pet products and services—pet food, non-food pet supplies, veterinary services, and non-medical pet services—and details strategic activity in all of the major retail channels, paying particular attention to the market impact of e-commerce and technology-driven and other emerging products and services.

The U.S. pet industry received a welcome boost in 2019, with overall sales of products and services rising 5.4%. Continued booming online transactions delivered incremental gains, and a larger-than-expected pet food sales increase in mass channels bolstered the overall market, which Packaged Facts estimates at $95.0 billion in 2019. The largest classification, retail channel pet food, rose 6.1% to $36.6 billion and 39% of the market, an increase second only to that of the much smaller non-medical pet services classification, which grew 6.3% to $10.3 billion (11% of the market). Veterinary services continued to advance at a robust pace, up 5.7% to $30.1 billion (32% of the market), while retail channel pet supplies posted the slowest growth, up 3.2% to $18.0 billion (19% of the market).
