The top 14 packaged food categories are forecast to increase at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.1% from 2019 to 2024, reaching sales of $295 billion. Notwithstanding the impact of the coronavirus, most of the main food categories are mature and rely primarily on population growth, which has been sluggish for years.

The best performing categories are at opposite ends of the health spectrum—fresh packaged salads and salty snacks. The former sell well because of their convenience, health, and nutrition, while the latter’s success comes from indulgent pleasure.

Many of the other categories that perform at average or above-average levels inhabit the indulgent space—frozen pizza, cookies, chocolate candy, and ice cream. The worst performing categories—bread, cereal, frozen dinners, yogurt, and soup—have been tarnished by their perception as highly processed and full of artificial ingredients or sugar and salt, despite efforts to change that mindset.
