The U.S. exported approximately 320,000 metric tons of pet food to Canada in 2019, up 19% over 2018. Canada exported $599 million in pet food in 2019, up from $498 million in 2014. Serge Boutet of SBNutrinnov Consultants (Quebec) reports that business groups from China, South Korea, and India are showing strong interest in pet food manufacturing in Canada.

The increasing role of technology in our lives—accelerated by this stay-at-home period of COVID-19 pandemic—has transformed not only pet product retailing but approaches and information sources for pet care overall. At the most evident level, during the pandemic stay-at-home era, 36% of Canadian dog or cat owners strongly or somewhat agree that they are buying pet products online more than they used to. And the influences and conveniences of technology are widespread: over a third of Canadian dog of cat owners somewhat or strongly agree that technology is allowing them to save time on pet care (38%), and to spend more quality time with their pets (36%). Moreover, the role of technology in the pet care market will inevitably grow in the future—a future that is already here, though unevenly distributed across generations.

Packaged Facts projects Canadian retail sales of dog and cat food to approach $1.8 billion in 2020, up 5% over 2019, buoyed by the pet adoption surge in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. For this same reason, a robust 4.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is projected for the category for the 2020-2014 period, lifting sales to US$2 billion by 2013 and US$2.1 billion in 2024.
