Sales of the major beverage categories are forecast to increase at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.2% from 2020 to 2025, reaching about $183 billion. Sales spiked in 2020 by about 9% due to the impact of the coronavirus as consumers ate and drank virtually everything at home.

Overall major beverage category sales didn’t experience as big of an increase in 2020 as major food categories (+14%) since a high percentage of packaged beverage consumption occurs when people are out of home – at school, work, events, gyms, exercising, travelling, etc. Additionally, a relatively high percentage of beverage sales (especially water, soda, energy drinks, and RTD juices and teas) occur in convenience stores, which lost a lot of consumer traffic in 2020 since people weren’t out much.

Beverage sales growth is projected at a significantly lower rate in 2021 (+4%), as many Americans receive vaccinations and much of the country reopens to pre-pandemic activities – including eating outside of the home. The rise of the Delta variant at the end of July and beginning of August, plus a stall in vaccination rates, could affect sales projections for 2021 and beyond.

Packaged beverage sales varied by category during the pandemic. Breakfast at home, as well as a need for hydration and caffeine jolts during the day, had an especially large impact on the best-selling beverage categories in 2020:

  • Dairy alternative beverages (non-dairy, plant-based drinks), dairy beverages (milk and creamers), juice, coffee, carbonated soft drinks (especially diet versions)
  • Bottled water (volume was high and higher than dollar sales since consumers purchased less expensive products in supermarkets more than higher priced products in convenience stores). Flavored sparkling waters have been standouts as healthier alternatives to sugary sodas.
