Fresh Pet Food in North America: The Raw/Frozen, Refrigerated and Homemade Wave:
Affluent consumers over the past decade have been willing to pay more for higher quality foods that improve and maintain the health of their furry friends. This trend has led to $169 million in North American sales of fresh pet food in 2007.  Compared to the overall North American market’s $18 billion reported sales in 2007, the fresh pet food market is small; however, the concept of fresh pet food is on the rise and a 23% CAGR anticipated for the next 5 years will bring this market to $473 million by 2012.  The report includes primary interviews with top industry experts and is supported by extensive canvassing of the Internet, where the “word-of-mouth” raw foods movement has long been based and continues to spread.

Market Outlook: Current Issue

2006-2012: The Years of Natural and Organic
It’s not impossible to predict the future. In December 2006, the Packaged Facts report Brand Building in the U.S. Market for Pet Products and Services reported that “…another important company ‘up for grabs’ is Nutro, which after being acquired by Bain Capital in December 2005 is now in the hands of venture capitalists. One of the most likely scenarios for this company is that it will soon end up in the hands of Mars.” In May 2007, Mars announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire Nutro.
