White Paper: Almond Milk as the New Other White Milk

In 2011, almond milk was the fastest-growing plant milk in sales and popularity in the U.S. retail market.  Almond milk has much to recommend it.  Almonds are not only very familiar to Americans, but benefit from a significant reputation as a health food.  For some consumers, almond milk may be preferable to dairy milk due to the lack of cholesterol and lactose.  A plant milk, moreover, will be the choice of vegans.  Based on a sales jump of 79%, almond milk claimed a fifth of the U.S. retail market for diary alternative beverages in 2011.  Among dairy alternative beverages, almond milk also accounted for the most new product introductions over the 2009-2011 period.  Packaged Facts survey data show that 9% of U.S. adults are now using almond milk, and only a fifth of these current almond milk consumers used this product five years ago, compared with half of soy milk users.  This brief white paper draws from our report on Dairy Alternative Beverages in the U.S: Soy Milk, Almond Milk, Rice Milk and Other Dairy Milk Alternatives.
